What is a Leadership Academy?
A Leadership Academy is a group of young people aged 11+ within a club, school, or leisure centre who want to develop their leadership skills. The group can work as a group or with its own constitution, committee members and bank account. What do Leadership Academies do? Academy members follow the MY Leadership Academy Programme. The leaders meet throughout the year to help plan events, complete training and socialise as a group. What is the MY Leadership Academy Programme? The MY Leadership Academy Programme is designed to create a structure which young people can follow to help them develop as leaders within gymnastics environments (schools, clubs and leisure centres). The programme encourages leaders to complete five different ‘topic’ areas: MY Learning: Leaders are tasked with completing a number of different courses, both generic and sport specific. MY Development: Leaders are tasked with identifying a mentor and learning from working alongside them. MY Volunteering: Leaders are tasked with volunteering their time at events and meetings. MY Future: Leaders are tasked with producing a development plan and working towards completing their goals. MY Projects: Leaders are tasked with identifying appropriate needs, and running a project to add benefits to themselves and their club. The programme introduces Young Leaders to the various roles and opportunities available within gymnastics, helps them to identify their strengths and the aspects of gymnastics they enjoy and encourages leaders to stay within the sport for longer, creating a larger and stronger workforce for the future, while providing them with transferable life skills, recorded in a way that allows their efforts to be recognised. The programme is specifically targeted at Young Leaders aged 11-17, but is equally open to anyone over the age of 17. The MY Leadership Academy booklet is available free to members of British Gymnastics. The programme is structured, yet flexible in that it can be adapted to suit the needs of individuals and different environments. There are awards, rewards and recognition available at various stages of completion to encourage the leaders to continue to develop. Who runs the Academy? Each Academy will elect an Academy Captain. This person is usually an older leader or a coach at the club. The Captain is responsible for organising meetings and keeping all members on track with their development. Some Academies have more than one captain to share this responsibility. HGC's Captain is David Bovis, also Vice Chairman for the Club. David currently runs a £3.5M T/O company in East Suffolk and has previously delivered leadership and business development to executive teams, as a consultant across Europe. What support is provided? The Academy Captain is provided with a support pack, consisting of a guide booklet and a memory stick full of useful documents, to assist with running a successful academy. Your local British Gymnastics Development Team are able to offer additional support and guidance throughout the programme. We provide a facebook group for leaders wanting to find volunteer opportunities: I am BG - I am a Volunteer. For More information, please contact the club or visit the BG Website Text reads:
Six Months hard work by Haverhill Gymnastics Club has paid off with the award of GymMark accreditation from British Gymnastics This has been earned in recognition of their newly-implemented management framework. Their efforts paid off in the form of a visit from double bronze Olympic medallist Max Whitlock, who attended on behalf of British Gymnastics to present them with their plaque. Covered by local papers and Anglia News, this is timely exposure for the club who are pushing hard to raise funds for a stand-alone facility, desperately required to accommodate a waiting list of around 300 children. They have an application submitted to Sport England's "Inspired Facilities" match funding program for £150,000. If approved, they have other fund-raisers lined up to match the grant. Combined all funding will take them halfway to their £600,000 target.
"This is timely exposure for the club who are pushing hard to raise funds for a stand alone facility, desperately required to accommodate a waiting list of approximately 300 children" More than 200 members currently use the club, which practices at Haverhill Leisure Centre on Mondays and Saturdays, but it desperately wants its own facility to accommodate growing demand.
Haverhill Gymnastics is trying to raise £600,000 for the project and has an application submitted to Sport England's inspired facilities match-funding programme for £150,000. he club said if it's bid is approved, other funders are lined up to match the grant, which will take it halfway to its target. To find out the latest information about the clubs fundraising efforts, log on to www.haverhillgymnastics.org/blog That's what it said in the paper and if you're reading this here, you probably already followed that link ;-) Thanks for taking an interest. What an AMAZING day!!!Big thanks go out to Max Whitlock and Lynsey from British Gymnastics for giving up part of their weekend to come along and present our wonderful club with the GymMark accreditation, awarded by British Gymnastics for our recently implemented club management framework. We would also like to thank Kate from Anglia News for coming along and covering the event for us "on the telly." This is all fantastic stuff and helps us get closer to raising the profile and the funds required for our new stand alone facility. (See our donations page for more details). Kate Prout from Anglia news attended and the article was broadcast at 17:40 on Saturday 3rd November. (See above or click http://vimeo.com/52753199 ). The Club Vice Chair David Bovis highlights the visit was not to 'Open the Club' as the text accompanying the news report, but to present the GymMark accreditation alongside British Gymnastics Area manager Lynsey Paframan. He goes on to say, "the club hopes this kind of media coverage and recognition will show potential sponsors that the club can and will lead to significant exposure ..." this is of course excellent coverage for a fantastic forward looking club in the run up to the decision about their application for the 'Inspired Facilities' funding required to build a dedicated & full-time facility. It was great to see everyone at the Disco last night. We all got into the ""Spirit"" of things .....nyah ha haaaaa! We took a hundred pounds in ticket prices, leaving £60 for the 'New Building pot' after expenses. So ... A HUGE ""Thank-you"" to Andy Palazon who did the Disco FOC!!! And what a fantastic disco it was too - brilliant music all night long - cheers Andy! and everyone that came to support us.... now for the Big Day ... Max Whitlock on site to present our GyMark Plaque today!!!! If you miss it, you'll be able to see it on Anglia news tonight (if all goes to plan) - further updates later ....
All proceeds will be going towards the 'New Building' project.
Please come along for a couple of hours of fun, fancy dress and generally letting your hair down. See Cheryl for further details and tickets.
